How tax lives in SAP

SAP already does tax determination. The real question is whether its standard logic is enough.

The one idea

SAP has standard tax determination built in — as each document is created it picks a tax code and rate from configuration and master data. For straightforward cases it just works; the question is what happens when your countries and flows get complex.

Where it happens

The modules
Tax is determined in the sales (SD) and purchasing (MM) process and posted in finance (FI).
Tax codes
The codes that carry the rate and drive the G/L postings.
Condition technique
SAP's standard mechanism for finding the right value (here, the right tax) from a set of rules.
Master data
Customer, vendor, material, plant, ship-from/ship-to — the inputs the logic reads.

Where standard SAP runs out

  • Fine for the basics — domestic sales, common tax codes, a handful of countries.
  • Strained by complexity — many countries, cross-border chains, frequent rule changes, exemptions.
  • Hard to keep current — rates and rules change faster than config is maintained by hand.

This gap is why specialised determination — often a native add-on inside SAP — exists. See Extending SAP and, in Tax & Compliance, Determination at source.
